Attack on Samuel Bai

Crow Girl

The attack on Samuel Bai is brought into the investigation through a video found in Viggo Dürer’s cellar. It shows Samuel chained and struggling against a partly undressed man whom Jeanette Kihlberg and Jens Hurtig recognize as the man they had found dead in a cottage in Lapland. The footage therefore does more than record an assault: it ties Samuel’s death to a figure already encountered in the investigation and to the wider evidence preserved at Hundudden.

The Recording and Its Identification

The video is discovered among the Polaroids in Dürer’s cellar. In it, Samuel is restrained while the other man attacks him; the passage identifies the recording as a film of Samuel’s death. The man’s recognition by Jeanette and Jens provides a concrete investigative link to the body found in the Lapland cottage, although the evidence presented here does not give the man’s name or explain his connection to Samuel.

The Wider Case Archive

The recording sits within a substantial collection of files and folders. Among them are copies of photographs of the bodies found at Thorildsplan, Svartsjölandet, Danvikstull, and Barnängen. The archive brings the assault into proximity with the investigations of the murdered boys, without establishing that every crime in the collection had the same perpetrator or circumstances.

The earlier inquiries had already raised the possibility of linked killings. At Svartsjölandet, Jeanette concluded that the team was probably dealing with a double murder after a second boy’s body showed signs of extreme violence and a degree of precision resembling the earlier case. Investigators had recovered two shoe prints, one large and one nearly child-sized, as well as vehicle tyre tracks, but initially lacked comparisons that could make those traces decisive. Four weeks after the first boy was found, a third body appeared at the boules club below Danvikstull; experts judged its embalming successful. These discoveries give the photographs in Dürer’s cellar a disturbing investigative context: records of separate scenes now sit together in one repository.

Investigative Consequences

Other details in the cellar collection connect Dürer’s property to the Svartsjölandet inquiry. Forensics established that the car which had scraped a tree near the body’s discovery site was the same car parked under a tarpaulin at Hundudden. This is a specific material link between a murder scene and the location where the video and photographs were found, distinct from the recognition made from the recording itself.

The recovered archive also changes the scale of the investigation. The four cases under examination have been solved, but the files point to evidence of another forty bodies, and the material is to be passed to Europol. Samuel’s recorded death is thus both a particular act of violence and one part of a much larger body of evidence whose full reach remains beyond the immediate cases.
